You are quite welcome. I have my web page there purposely to catch surfing
cousins like you.

I would like to have his address, to see if he has any more information than
I do. A Sydney Merlin Spidell wrote the book on the subject, and you will
find that most references trace back to him. Most of his work was done on
the Canadian Speidels. He died recently, but his book can be viewed on
microfilm through interlibrary loan at the LDS Family History Centers. The
title is: "The Speidel Family of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia; Speidel -
Ofterdingen Branch; History and Genealogy" by Sidney Merlin Spidell.

All of the Speidels are related, and all trace their ancestry back to
Schwebia, which is now Switzerland. The Canadian and the American Speidels
seem to all trace their family back to Ofterdingen. The name is originally
Speidel, and Spidell is an obvious Anglicization.

Many parts of the family ended up with Spidell quite independantly of each
other. As for my part of the family: My grandfather did not know how to
spell it. There was a big row in the family when his children were mostly
grown, as to how to spell the name. Part of the family ended up spelling it
Spidel and the rest spelled it Spidell. I actually think my grandfather's
name was spelled Spidle when he was born.
