If you are talking about in the UK there is the annual Medical Directory that lists all medical practitioners with a little biography. This goes back to about 1870 (I think). I know because my great grandfather and grandfather were doctors and are listed. A good library should have these.

Is anyone aware whether there is an association, or perhaps register, of
medical practitioners going back to the beginning of the 20th century? I am
trying to locate a Dr Evans who apparently moved to Sri Lanka at about that
time.
