by confining all conversations to genealogy research related discussions

I agree! Let's have a Chat Club! Genealogy is about far more than just
names and dates, and sharing memories and family stories is a great way
to get a picture of the people who are our ancestors.

It does need to be separate from this mailing list. I've been on a very
relaxed list, where posts relating in any way to life in the area are
allowed (and sometimes they wander waay off topic) - it was just
fascinating! However, the "serious" genealogists did not like it. My
problem was that it has an enormous number of posts (over 1000 a month)
so I unsubscribed and just read the archives when I have lots of time to
spare. Of course, now I feel like I am missing out because I can't
join in.

And it would be fantastic if we could display photos .....

Well, how would we do this? Just toss out an idea
and see who responds? Or would that tie up
the "digitised waves"? We did discuss what being _Burgher_
meant awhile back.
Fazil, maybe you could guide us on this? Don't want to violate rules.
What I find in talking about Lanka is that we usually find
out: "Oh, you're related to him/her?". Chatting seems to help
the searching. Greetings to all from a very cold Netherlands.
