Before you dismiss Ancestry's complete BMD index, just try putting in
say SMEE for the quarter in question, then click forwards through the
pages.
Unfortunately, in some instances the indexer has taken the bottom name
on the page as the 'end' and when it is something written in it may be
out of order - so giving the impression that there are no entries for
that quarter,

What you seem to have discovered is a quirk of the search engine.
If you put in SMITH and 1925 + or - 1 year, you get 18 pages of SMITH
entries for Dec, quarter 1925.
