I am descended from a Rickles Stanley, born about 1784 in Va. but by 1800 living
in what is now Mitchell County, NC. and was then Burke County. From the names
that you give in your message, your Stanley's and mine are likely related. Main
reason I think there is a connection is the Garland first name. My STanley line
married again and again into the Garlands. Suggest you check Garland family
site. I am forwarding your message to a Garland researcher also. Also suggest
you get hold of a book called Tidewater Families of the New World, which has a
whole section on early Stanleys, including some who were in Montgomery County. I
am told this has many errors, but I think it could be helpful. Let me know if
you find it possible to find this book. I could send you a copy of the STanley
section.
What I know:
My Rickles settled in Mitchell County, NC (then Burke) just prior to 1800.
Later census records lead us to believe he was born about 1784 in Va. Oral
family history claims that his father was an Alfred Stanley who lived in 1777 in
what is now Hawkins County, TN, in an area called Stanley Valley. It is said he
fought in an early battle of the Revolution, that his first wife and child were
killed in an Indian attack on the cabin in 1777, that he went back to Va.,
remarried, etc. We can't find any documentation of his existence, however.
Recent research by a genealogist in NC shows that Rickles first shows up in
Burke, NC beside an older Joseph Stanley, who was of an age to have possibly been
his father. This Joseph has a large number of children, some of who we THINK are
Joseph b 1784, Biddy, b 1788, John
b 1790, George b 1793 etc. etc. (there are a bunch more whose names we have no
idea of)
Rickles had a son William, b 1798. That William married Telitha Garland,
daughter of Guttredge (spellings vary) Garland.
I am eager to know the source of your information. Please reply.
