It's been changing. : ) I think USGenWeb has reached the point in
its history when it should be a fully independent organization without
debts or obligations to any other genealogical entity or person. That
means I support moving the national pages off the RW server.

Having given my opinion, I do realize that it raises dozens of new
questions and issues. Please don't ask me to detail those today or
even tomorrow. <grin>

The AB does not control what any other USGenWeb sites do, but I'd
encourage every volunteer to become informed about the issues and
options and consciously decide what s/he wants to do. The USGenWeb
sites I host are currently on RW. I also have one RW freepage, which
already has the banners. I haven't yet thought about what I'll do with
them.

|
| Dear Karen,
|
| I can't speak for other AB members, but the primary reason I haven't
| been posting here or on other lists is that I'm busy listening to
all
| of you. It's your turn to talk, and my job to listen, so that I can
| understand and represent your concerns. If I have questions about
your
| positions, I'll ask them.
|
| Our focus currently is on the banners that TGN/RW will be placing on
| USGenWeb sites. Tina has answered questions raised about them, and
| posted an additional message from our contact at RW, David Graham.
| This is not something the AB was able to say yes or no to; it was a
| given, and all we could do was ask for specific information about
| when, what, and how, which we've conveyed to you as clearly as we
can.
|
| We've also reminded everyone that each state and CC has the right,
| according to the Bylaws, to choose a server. We're learning, as you
| are, that some states and counties are moving or planning to move
from
| RW because of the banners. No decision has yet been made about
whether
| the national pages will be moved, though the question has been
| discussed, both on the lists and among the AB members.
|
| The volume of my email is significant enough that while I've been
| writing to you, several dozen more emails have arrived. I know some
of
| my colleagues are getting much more than I am, and I shudder to
think
| about the NC's inbox, which is overloaded on any given day.
|
| We're doing the best we can to listen to you, note questions and
give
| or get answers to them when we can, track recurring issues, and take
| what we know from you and from our collective experience to the
| negotiations with TGN/RW.
|
| Many of the questions and issues are upsetting and worrying for us
as
| members of USGenWeb, just as they are for you with the added burden
| that it's our job to come up with answers and solutions. We need to
| figure out what the project members want and need and how we can
| secure that, if we can. We also need to listen to TGN/RW and
| understand, as well as we can, what they expect from us and what
that
| means for USGenWeb. Should we believe they have our best interests
in
| mind? Should we suspect everything they say? It's obvious that the
| reasonable answer to those questions lies somewhere between the
| extremes, but where exactly? It's not that simple to decide, but
we're
| working on it, and we need your understanding and support as we
| continue to work on it.
|
| I can tell you--and here I will speak for my colleagues as well as
| myself--that every single person on the AB is doing his or her best
| for the project. There isn't one of us who doesn't passionately
| believe in the mission of USGenWeb to put genealogical data online,
| free for everyone to use. Please stand by us. We need you, and you
| need us. To quote what the kids in America have been singing, "We're
| all in this together."

||
|| And why aren't we hearing from the Advisory Board members? I have
| yet to see
|| one of them join the conversation here. Why is that? I voted you
| people into
|| office, I would expect you could at the very least talk to me and
| let me
|| know what YOUR thoughts are on this. Where is the representation
you
|| promised me? Every one of you are on this list, but we aren't
| hearing from
|| you. Why? I am not being confrontational, I'm being factual. I
| expect to
|| hear from you people. You throw this discussion open and then just
| sit back
|| and ignore it, no input. Which makes us feel like you could care
| less what
|| we say.
