Michael Steer was baptised 15th Aug 1794 to Michael and Mary at Aveton
Gifford.
The elder Michael was born on 17th Aug 1769 and baptised on 3rd Sept 1769
to Richard and Jane at Aveton Gifford. He married, on 4th Oct 1791, Mary
Elliott at Aveton Gifford. Both were from Aveton Gifford and both signed
the register. The name is then spelt Stear but that is of no consequence.
The witnesses were John Gee and Benjamin Searle (who was probably
churchwarden and almost a professional witness!).
I can't find any record of Richard's birth or marriage, but the parishes
here are so close that movements to adjacent parishes were common.
Although Elliott is the commonest name in AG, I cannot find any birth of a
suitable Mary - there are lots around but not at the right date.
I would like to put the story of Michael on the Aveton Gifford OPC web
site, and perhaps the editors of the village magazine would be interested.
"AG man meets wild west" would be an interesting story!
