Dear Pamela and Philip,
Re. Steer-Rowe connection. I can perhaps add something to this discussion but
I'm afraid nothing concrete to connect the 2 families you wrote about. I am a
decendant of John Rowe and Mary Ann Steer in Aust.
Firstly Philip, I have 2 children to them. Edwin, whom you wrote about (he's my
g-g-grandfather), and Elizabeth Emma bap. 22 Sep 1833 Yealmpton. She was listed
on the shipping index to S.A. in 1849 and was known as Emma. She married
Edmund Cooke 1853. Children: John b. 1854 & Elizabeth 1856. Emma died 3 weeks
after Elizabeth's birth and Elizabeth died at 5 wks. They are buried at
Gumeracha in the same grave. All the places you mentioned in S.A. are in the
same area in the Adelaide Hills near Adelaide. If you want more info. I can
forward it.
Re. the Rowe connection.
I have some info on John Rowe's family.
He had only one sister to my knowledge - Mary b.1813 m. Richard Mann 1840.
Their only child (I think) was Jane b. 1841. In 1851 Census Richard and Jane
were living with Mary's parents - Richard was a widower. I think Mary died
earlier that year.
Previous generation:
John's parents were Richard and Jane (nee Dyer) - son of John Rowe and Mary
Hilson. They had 4 children - 1. John b.1874 no other info. 2. Richard b. 1877
still living in Torr with wife Jane in 1861 Census. 3. Jenny b. 1780 m William
Algar Budge in 1802. Children were all born in Yealmpton. 1851 Census - Jenny
lived with daughter and son-in-law in Plymouth. d. 1855. 4. James b.1884 m
Mary Ann Shillabeer 1814. I have one child - James b. 1823 but nothing else on
him. In 1851 Census James and MaryAnn were living in the house next to brother
Richard in Torr (these houses were left to them in their father's Will). 1861
Census - neither James nor Mary Ann were there - Deceased?.
So .... the only possible connections (to my knowledge) could be through John
Rowe (uncle of John Rowe who m. Mary Ann Steer) or James Rowe (cousin of John
Rowe who m. Mary Ann Steer).
To go back another generation my info becomes sketchy. - parents William &
Richord (nee Slade)
Pamela your Rowe names don't seem to fit my family except William. They were
Methodists & later Baptists in S.A. Cornelius Theophilus Rowe sounds more RC
or Irish - what do you think?
I'm happy to provide more info. if you want it but perhaps contact me privately
as it's off this mailing list's name. My apologies if anyone thinks this should
have been private.
