John,
I've had a bit of a dig at your list of SLEER etc. IGI entries. Really
interesting set of ideas. They're a bit like the curate's egg. There seem to
be a couple of general points:-
1. A number are described as being "records submitted by a member of the LDS
Church" and thus were added to the IGI before 1991 when the policy of
insisting on rather more care about entries was introduced. My experience
has taught me to be very wary about all such entries and especially the
older ones. There are such examples in this batch.
2. There are some SLYER etc. entries that I have added to your original
list.
3. There is no obvious pattern to these entries, although the Crediton ones
do indicate that your suggestion that many SLEAR entries should be STEAR may
well be valid. I wonder if there are any SIEER/SIER ones around?
I have had a look at my records for the Devon ones and found
Marriages:-
<Humphrey SLEAR: Mar 12 AUG 1651 Uffculme, Devon>
Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church
Humphrey STEARE was the vicar of Uffculme and remained there from 1620 until
his death in 1660. This was his second marriage, his first wife Rebecca died
in 1650, there are letters from him expressing his sadness at her death in
the Wiltshire Record Office - Uffculme was a peculiar parish and although in
Devon was transferred by Henry VIII in about 1543 from the diocese of Exeter
to that of Salisbury. It was to Grace COLE - this IGI record not only has
his surname wrong, but they have Jean as her forename. There is also an
ancestral file entry for a marriage of a Hun STEAR to Gean COLE on 4.4.1648,
which is even more inaccurate.
Births
<Humphrey SLEAR: Bir About 1626 Of, Uffculme, Devon
Humphrey SLEAR: Bir About 1626 Of, Uffculme, Devon>
Records submitted by a member of the LDS Church
The IGI has these two baptisms for children of Humphrey and Rebecca,
confirmed by the parish registers
14.4. 1622 Elizabeth STEARE
Uffculme, Devon Humphrye STEARE 8; 94
4.11. 1624 Humfry STEARE
Uffculme, Devon Humfry STEARE 8
Just taking twenty-five years for a man or twenty-one for a woman from the
date of a marriage and assuming that the party was born in that year is a
jolly silly idea. These two SLEAR births need to be expunged.
<Elizabeth SLEERE: Chr 15 JUN 1628 Crediton, Devon John SLEERE
Joan SLEERE: Chr 11 NOV 1629 Crediton, Devon John SLEERE
John SLEERE: Chr 11 NOV 1629 Crediton, Devon John SLEERE>
Extracted birth or christening records for the locality listed in the record
These are LDS copies of Victorian transcriptions.
There is a collection of STEER baptisms for that period on the IGI. It may
well be that these three are part of that series.
30.11. 1624 William STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE - 8
18.2. 1626 Mary STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE - 8
14.4. 1630 John STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE - 8
24.4. 1631 Philip STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE - 9
20.1. 1632/3 Christian STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE - 8
24.3. 1632 Marie STEERE
Crediton, Devon - Joan STEERE 8
20.5. 1632 Mary STEER
Crediton, Devon John STEER - 8
18.8. 1633 Prudence STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE - 8
15.3. 1634/5 Danyell STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE Elizabeth 8
15.5. 1636 Richard STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE Christian 8
3.7. 1636 Thomas STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE Elizabeth 8
19.1. 1639/40 Damaris STEERE
Crediton, Devon John STEERE Elizabeth 8
<Martha Longman SLEER or STUR or STEER: Bir 31 DEC 1844, Devon>
Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church and includes her death on
10.11.1862. No parents shewn
The birth of Martha Longman STEER in Q4 1844 in Torrington, Devon district
is recorded in GRO records volume X page 304
Whether she was born on 31.12.1844 is a matter for conjecture - that date
may have been chosen as it was the last day in the quarter, nor can I verify
the date of her death. But the inclusion of three possible surnames does
make me very suspicious. But it is probable that Mary was a STEER.
<Peter SLEER: Mar 1713 Spreyton, Devon Joan GERMAN Extracted marriage record
for locality listed in the record>
There quite a number of STEER marriages on the IGI for that period in
Spreyton. Again they would have come from a Victorian transcription, but
there is no reason to doubt their veracity.
This is the expanded list of non-Devon events
