Ian,
Thomas George STEER passed the examination to obtain his master's
certificate in Liverpool in 1864. Details of the extract from Lloyd's
Captain's register of 1869 are below.

Does anyone know of web sites where details of the ships might be found?

certain rank in RN)

CHT = certificate of competence for home trade, passenger
