Margaret,
I can see no obvious way forward on finding out whether or not George DAWSON
was John STEER's father, but it is just possible research into the
subsequent WOOD family might provide a clue.
Does anyone have any records for WOOD gravestones in Crowhurst?
Margaret wrote
<Don't feel brave or rich enough to send off for either of these
certificates, as only vague possibility that they refer to Thomas STEER born
1816 in Crowhurst, Surrey>
Very wise, especially as in 1851 a Thomas STEER (unmarried farm labourer
aged 40, born Crowhurst, Surrey) was living at Sunt Farm, Oxted, Surrey as a
servant in the household of Benjamin STEER (farmer of 220 acres employing 5
men and 1 boy, aged 56, born Crowhurst, Surrey). If this is the same Thomas,
Benjamin was his uncle, but I do not know the answer to this riddle.
I did wonder whether Thomas STEER was dead by 1822 as James and Mary Ann
appear to have had four children baptised in Crowhurst and as the third was
a Thomas, perhaps Thomas STEER had died, but I do not have his burial and
there appears to be no such record in Crowhurst.
21.6.1818 - Emma WOOD - James and Mary of Challomes Farm
13.6.1819 - William WOOD
24.2.1822 - Thomas WOOD
17.8.1823 - Dinah WOOD
And on 17.3.1822 Thomas WOOD an infant was buried in Crowhurst
There are two James WOOD wills that might provide the answer
James WOOD of Croydon, Surrey - 15 October 1845 - Catalogue reference PROB
11/2026 - Prerogative Court of Canterbury
James WOOD, Nursery and Seedsman of Saint George the Martyr Southwark,
Surrey - 6 January 1853 - Catalogue reference PROB 11/2166 - Prerogative
Court of Canterbury
And I found this intriguing entry in the Surrey quarter sessions - Epiphany
Sessions 1798 - ref QS2/6/1798Eph/50
Notice of trial by James WOOD upon an indictment for assault brought against
him by Mary WOOD his wife
Nothing to do with this James WOOD as he was the illegitimate son of Ann
WOOD
Regards,
Jack Steer
