Jack, I am getting a little confused here.
Edward Steer married Lucy Wood in Westerham 1819.
You say that Edward is described as of Limpsfield, and you looked for
baptisms of Edward in Limpsfield c 1796 and failed to find any suitable
ones. According to the 1851 census, Edward was born in LINGFIELD, not
Limpsfield.
Thus I have looked for Edward born Lingfield c 1796 in IGI. Still no joy.
In fact, the only Edward Steer's born/baptised 1796 +/- 2 years, in Surrey,
would appear to be the following, both sons of a John and Ann Steer,
EDWARD STEER
Christening: 18 OCT 1796 Crowhurst, Surrey, England
Parish registers, 1567-1890
EDWARD STEER -
Christening: 28 OCT 1796 Crowhurst, Surrey, England
Parish register transcripts, 1567-1812
Since these 2 are from different batch numbers and different sources, I
presume they relate to the same person, with a different interpretation of
date ?
What would you say the chances are that Edward could have been born in
Lingfield, mother staying with friends/family, and being christened in
Crowhurst?
Or mistaken with his place of birth?
My John Steer 1814 of Crowhurst, Surrey gives his place of birth in 1861 and
1881 as Westerham, Kent.
I think it is a deliberate attempt on the part of our ancestors to confuse
and irritate us, a wicked well thought out plot!
Margaret
