Hi
I've been trying to mail the document below to the rootsweb site for Steers, however no luck so far. Your name seems to come up regularly in relation to Bovey Tracey Steers, so I've sent it on to you. Any comments from you would be most welcome. If you can get the doc onto the message board that would be great.
kind regards
Dave Turton
Hi
Below is a list of my Steer family tree. Has anyone got any further information or 'connections' to this tree? Particularly going back before Joseph Steer B. 1831, or family connections to Theophilus Steer B.1864 or John Joseph Steer B.1866.
John Steer B. 1799 married Grace Smith in 1818.( I think) Their children: Joseph B. 1831, Mary B.1840, Jonas B. 1834, Elizabeth B.1837. John and Grace Steer are found on the 1841 Census living in Bovey Tracey at South Brook (where everyone seems to be called Steer).
The steer family are found on the 1851 census still living in Bovey. Joseph is now 20 and a shoemaker.
In 1855 Joseph Steer married Susan Manley at Bovey, Joseph is a 'cordwainer' or shoemaker. Susan presumably is a stepdaughter as she gives her father as 'John Pascoe'. (Latter she calls herself Susannah Manley Pascoe.)
By 1861 Joseph is a light house keeper in Plymouth, living with his wife Susan and his children Hephzibah B. 1857 and Rhoda B. 1858.
Around 1864 to 1866 Joseph was alight housekeeper at Dovercourt (Harwich) where his sons John and Theophilus were born.
In 1869 Joseph Steer was a lighthouse keeper on Les Hanois light Guernsey, his son Ebenezer Clement was born on Guernsey in 1869. Joseph's wife gives her maiden name as Susannah Manley Pascoe.
In 1871 Hephzibath and Rhoda Steer are living with their (presumed) step relatives in Bovey Tracey: the Pascoe household at Heathfield cottages.
Joseph and Susan Steer meanwhile are living at Start Light house in Devon with their other children Trefena B. 1862, Theophilus B.1864, John B.1866 and Ebenezer B.1869. Amy was born at Start in 1873
In 1877 Rhoda Steer married Thomas Cutting at Penzance. Thomas was a lighthouse keeper on the Longships light and the Lizard, both very isolated lights.
In 1881 Joseph Steer is a lighthouse keeper at Menai lighthouse on Anglesey. Amy and Trephenie are living at Menai. Ebenezer is staying a few miles away at Beamaris, perhaps with one of the few English speaking families in the area.
In 1881 Hephzibath Steer is a school governess in Poplar London, Theophilus is staying with her and working in the local engineering works. In December 1881 Hephzibath married Richard Green in Poplar.
In 1879 Rhoda and Thomas had a son Thomas E Curtting, born at the Lizard Cornwall.
In 1891 Rhoda and Thomas Cutting are living in Dungeness, where Thomas is a lighthouse keeper
In 1880 Rhoda and Thomas had a daughter: Rhoda E. Cutting. Rhoda had gone back to her parents on Anglesey to give birth, perhaps due to the extreme isolation of their lighthouse station
In 1895 Theophilus married Martha Gould in Whitechapel.
In 1896 Ebenezer Steer married Harriett Thorpe in Leyton.
Ebenezer and Harriett had five children: Ethel B.1896 (a bit premature!?), Winifred B.1899, Evie B.1903, Clement, Ida B. 1909. However Harriet died in 1910. Ebenezer then married Minnie Knowles, a widow with two children, in 1913.
In 1901 Theophilus and Martha are living in West Ham and have two children: Joseph B.1897 and Ursula B.1898.
Joseph Steer died in 1895 after retiring to live in the West Ham area, his wife Susan had died in 1893 also in West Ham.
Ida Steer married William Turton in 1927 in Woolwich and they are my paternal grandparents.
In 1898 Hephzibah died in Edmonton. The family tradition (with limited document support) is that Amy Steer then married the widowed Richard Green on Guernsey, where this was legal. To complicate matters Rhoda E Steer also married a Green (but I haven't found any marriage records yet).
Any comments, information or criticism would be most welcome.
