Hi Ray: I think Tryphena wasn't all that uncommon a name during the Georgian
period. Our Tryphena was daughter of Joseph STEER of Bovey Tracey,
Lighthouse Keeper with Trinity House. She was actually born in Harwich, but
had siblings born at Start Point. I've been surprised at how much social
movement there was in that era, Mike.

TRYPHENA Steer (nee Gillard) baptised 1794 at the Ford Chapel. She married
William Steer Tolchard at Chivelstone in 1814 and had three children over
the next six years. After that there is just silence. There is no reference
to Tryphena or her husband in the 1841census nor the 1851 one.Their son-also
a William-noted that his father was a mariner now deceased (1845).

remember a Tryphena in their travels through the archives of South Devon?
