I have recently been discussing George Steer and Mary Mitchell with Gordon Steer in Australia, thought it would be interesting to the rest of the list.
My original message in July was re 1841 census, and the discrepancy in the name of the farm on which Richard Steer, George and Mary's son, was living.
Details interpreted as Capers Farm, but census entry clearly states Monks Farm.
Gordon has provided the following explanation and further details re the farm.-
''Capers Farm (Capeasland) - copies of the early contracts concerningthe leasing and releasing Capers Farm. It is written in Elizabethian /Latin.It has been transcribed and still doesn't make for easy reading butreference is clearly made to Capers Farm as Capeasland. The Ordinance Map, Pathfinder Series of Great Britain, Sheet TQ 44/54clearly names Capers Farm with the adjoining property Monks Farm.Additional comment may be of interest. Robert Bates, an Educational Adviserand a desendant of Richard and Sarah, STEER, as we are, was employed in thearea, in Surrey and was able to devote considerable time researching ourforebears. He wrote - " Richard and Sarah became 'tennant farmers', living in thecharming old house Capers Farm (also spelt Cappers Farm) together with theirchildren, some born there). ..... according to the 1840 - 41 tithingallotments for the Limpsfield Parish this farm was owned at the time byRobert Parsons and tennanted by Richard STEER.The farm today is accessed from Monks Lane running east from Grants Road andis set on the eastern side of the Crooked Creek. The confusion regarding Monks Farm dates from the 1841 census where theywere listed as being at 'Monks Farm'. However the census clearly shows thatWilliam Tamplin with wife and ten children were tennants at 'Monks Farm' notthe STEERs.
(The farm boy at 'Monks Farm' was a Tom Skinner.)
"Monks" in regard to the STEERs on the census was probably a reference toMonks Lane where Capers Farm is situated.''

I have recently found the following record online -
