Subject: [STEER] STEER family of East Grinstead and Newport, Monmouthshire
Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:27:06 -0000
The birth of Charles Edward STEER was registered East Grinstead district, Sussex (GRO 2b 139) in Q1 1871. He was born at Turners Hill, Worth, Sussex, where his father Edward STEER was postmaster.
Edward STEER had been married in Q2 1866 in Reigate district, Surrey (GRO 2a 237) to Ann HARDING. Her family were also from East Grinstead and her father, Thomas HARDING, was the owner of a grocery and drapers store in the High Street.
Edward STEER was a nonconformist and a strong supporter of religious and political freedom. In 1887, a member of the Salvation Army was arrested and sent to prison for preaching sermons in the High Street. STEER organised a large demonstration against this decision and helped re-establish the right of citizens to hold public meetings in the streets of East Grinstead. There is much more about him at http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk:80/SUsteer.htm
Edward and Ann had six children. The third and eldest son was Charles Edward STEER.
In 1891 Charles E STEER was described as an unmarried printer aged 20 and was living at Hawarden House, Green Hedges, East Grinstead, Sussex with parents. In 1882 his father had established the Southern Free Press and it is quite likely that Charles Edward was working for his father.
In Q2 1895 in East Grinstead, Sussex district (GRO 2b 279) Charles Edward STEER was married to Alice Maria BEARD.
They must have moved away from East Grinstead soon after the marriage as the birth of the first of their two known children (Elsie Florence STEER) was registered in Newport, Monmouthshire district (GRO 11a 223) in Q2 1896. The second, Wallace Leslie STEER, was registered in the same district in Q3 1899 (GRO 11a 191).
I have been sent copies of two photographs. The first is of Ann STEER nee HARDING taken on her birthday in 1915. On the back is written "Taken on my 71st birthday, Novr 22nd 1915, with love to Tom from AS.
The second is of Edward and Ann's son Charles Edward STEER with an impressive while beard. On the back of a photograph of is written "Mr C STEER of 36 Aston Crescent, near Malpas Rd, Newport, Monmouthshire".
Does anyone know any more about this family and especially the children of Charles Edward and Alice Maria - Elsie Florence born 1896 and Wallace Leslie born 1899?
Regards,
Jack Steer
