Hi John, Haven't been in contact for a while. Thank you for your answer. I
really have not done much on the Steers as I was not convinced that I was on
to the right ones. Now I feel I am, so perhaps I might go a bit further.
Our weather is just lovely now - not too hot and everything is green after
all our rain.
Best Wishes
Jill

In response to Jill's query, I think I can give some help.
The following Census entry for Modbury in 1851 gives:
*CENSUS 1851 HO107 1876 (f289 p4/5 ) 4 Moon’s Lane, Modbury*
William Steer Head Married 42 Mason Modbury, Devon
Mary Steer Wife Married 51 Newton Ferrers
John Steer Son Unmarried 14 Miller Modbury, Devon
George Steer Son Unmarried 10 Cornwood, Devon
Robert Steer Son Unmarried 8 Cornwood, Devon
Francis Steer Son Unmarried 4 Plympton St Mary
John Steer Father Widower 81 Pauper(ag.lab) Not known
I think that other evidence (which I don't have to hand as I write) will
indicate this as William Steer and Mary Coss.
I pursued this family for some time, a few years back, as the family of
William Steer who married Mary Bath but then realised my error.
An earlier census entry for the same family in 1841 gives:
*CENSUS 1841 HO107 217/6 (f4 p3 ) Dinston Village, Cornwood*
William Steer Head Married 35 Mason Yes
Mary Steer Wife Married 40 Yes
Jane Steer Daughter 8 Yes
John Steer Son 5 Yes
James Steer Son 3 Yes
George Steer Son 2 months Yes
Hope this is helpful.
I hope that you can show that Ann was the daughter of William Steer and
Mary Windsor.
But I have got no further help on the question of the Steer family
origins of a previous William Steer. Was he the son of William Steer and
Anne Daw (or Dawe) who married in Ringmore (by Kingsbridge) near Modbury
on 7th December 1774. This William Steer was from Bigbury Parish
according to the Banns published in the Register at Ringmore.
Ringmore is a very small village just south of Modbury.
Best wishes
John
