To comment on a few points raised:

We already have FreeCEN and FreeREG whose aims are to get the censuses and
PR's transcribed, so it would be better to support them than do our own
thing.

I run a small One-Name study and know just how time consuming it can be.
However if someone were to take on Steer and just a few variants to begin
with, I'm sure there would be help from others. The Guild of One-Name
Studies does have an archive that the data can be stored in, preferably
electronic, though you have to be a member. John Steer of Dorking did have
the Steer name registered but his membership lapsed. However you can still
run a one-name study without joining the Guild.

I believe that many of the studies on high volume surnames use Excel. I
personally use Generations (for families, not all connected, but all
accessible in the file database) combined with lists in Excel, but doubt my
system could cope with umpteen thousands of names.

There is also the Society of Genealogists Library in London, where many
leave or donate copies of their holdings. I was amazed at the huge volume of
books of transcripts of parishes there, most typewritten, so it is worth
checking what they have, their SOGCAT (catalogue) is on-line. Non members
can use the library in London for a small fee.

Devon is extensively researched and results are on Genuki, see
