Subject: Stewarts in Fayette County, Alabama Info...
Date: Wed, 9 Jul 1997 10:07:03 -0400
Here is the long-awaited info on Stewarts in Fayette County, Alabama that
my mother finally sent me.
The earliest land grants issued in Fayette Co went to Reuben and William
Stewart both dated Feb 15, 1820. They actually settled in Russell Beat
(like a precinct?) in 1818 or 1819. Other land grants to Stewarts in
Fayette County with dates granted include:
Benjamin Stewart, 8/25/1823
Charles Stewart, 11/4/1820
George Stewart, 6/11/1824
John Stewart, 11/20/1820
Larkin Stewart, 12/1/1821
Reuben Stewart, 2/15/1820, 1837
Solomon Stewart, 10/13/1820
William Stewart, 2/15/1820
Charles A. Stewart, 1854
Charles C. Stewart, 1858
James F. Stewart, 1858
James J. Stewart, 1858
John Stewart, 1850
William H. Stewart, 1855
Janes Stewart, 1860
Joseph J. Stewart, 1852
Larkin P. Stewart, 1855
Polly Stewart, 1856
Robert C. Stewart, 1859
Reuben C. Stewart, 1855
Rufus C. Stewart, 1855
William H. and James Stewart, 1854
The ones with only the year are second-generation Stewarts (Charles A.
Stewart is my g'g'g father) I believe.
Here's some more random info on Stewarts that might prove useful to someone
(any suggestions welcome!):
Among slave owners listed in Fayette Co in 1860 were:
John Stewart with 13
R.J. Stewart with 11
Mary Stewart with 18
Reuben Stewart with 22
In 1818 the Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church was organized--the oldest
site of worship for the county.
In the Holliman/Stewart Family Cemetery (6 miles west of Bluff Road) is the
grave of Reuben C. Stewart b 3/27/1822, d 1/9/1904.
In the Stewart Family Cemetery (1 mile west of US 43 south of the Bobo
School Site) is the grave of William Stewart b 3/24/1781, d 1832.
In the Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery (just east of US 43 on
the north edge of Fayetteville, across highway from a country store) is
grave of Charles A. Stewart b 11/15/1811, d 9/5/1871. new to this grave
which has a broken and almost unrecognizable tombstone is small stone with
"Babe Stewart--infant of Charles A. and Mary E. Stewart".
In 1852 there was a store in Fayetteville named Phillips & Stewart (Charles
A. Stewart was married to Mary E. Phillips).
Does this help anyone or ring any bells?
Thanks! (sorry it's so long!)
