The following is pretty much an abstract of the SCM info, plus other
personal verification on my part over the years. I've been to both Canonsburg
and the courthouse at Washington, PA; this seems to be accurate.
Please be kind enough to let me know who John married, and what happened
to his family in Kansas?

Ancestors of John Mercer Stewart

1.William STEWART b. [Paxtang?], 1785, Strabane Twp., Washington
Co., Pa., source: SCM, C: 305+, occupat/id: Shoemaker(footnote 1)
d. bef 22 Jun 1836, Cannonsburg, Washington Co., PA.
William Stewart took a warrant March 7, 1785 for 300 acres
and Hugh Stewart on the same day too a warrant for 300 acres in
Strabane Twp.Washington Co. They were probably the William and
Hugh from Paxtang [SCM,D:69]. William Stewart warranted February
2, 1786, 300A; August 22, 1786, 400A; and March 12, 1787 (with
Nicholas Little), 313+A [SCM,1938,XV(10),C:305)]
In 1790 William Stewart was enumerated 2-3-3 in Washington
County, pa., and William Stewart lived near Samuel Snodgrass,
Philip Doddridge and Alexander Anderson in 1790, in Strabane
Twp., Washington County.
William Stewart of Canonsburgh, Washington Co., will dated
Jun 5, 1835, proved Jun 22, 1836; daughter Hannah, son Samuel
(all my carpenter's tools), son James; executor James/John
Cummings; witnesses, Henry McAfee, Hugh Riddell (Washington Co.
Wills, 5:267).
On the third Monday in June, 1836, James Stewart under 14
years of age, minor son of William, asked the Orphan's Court to
give him a guardian, and "the court appointed his father, James
Stewart, guardian" (D:259). Barbara Roushingberger of Peters
Twp. petitioned the court at the Dec term, 1837, to appoint
Alexander Anderson guardian for her minor son, James Stewart,
under 14 years of age, and Anderson was appointed (C:339). The
account of James Cummings, executor of the will of William
Stewart, was presented at the March term, 1837 (D:388), and
settled in 1839.
William Stewart was one of the residents of Strabane Twp.,
Washington Co. who took an oath in 1794 (betw. Nov 15-Dec 30) to
support the authority of the United States, in settling the
famous Whiskey Insurrection [SCM,1938,XV(9),C: 301)]. Samuel
Snodgrass, Philip Doddridge, Alexander Anderson, James Cummings,
Henry McAfee, Hugh Riddell, Whiskey Rebellion/Insurrection (1794),
William Little, Hugh Stewart, James Barber

a daughter of James and Marjorie Magill (MEANS) WILSON; her
grandfather James WILSON is said to have been the signer of the
Declaration of Independence.
