Hi Doris,

Thanks to Larry Mai's great SCN I was able to track this down to see how you
got the impression you did. Amasa Stewart who married Regina Medaris is not
in the SCM; I gave Jeri all the Amasas there were, and suggested that she
should perhaps look in New England for her line as that is where the name
was used.

Amasa VT 1809 s.? error:Amanda(sic) A26,31+B185
Amasa CT 1762 s.Alex/SarahBogue A122
Amasa ME 1805 s.Amasa/EuniceIreland A99,144
Amasa VT 1809 s.Barz/MaryFrost B185+A26,31
Amasa MA 1768 s.Dan/MaryIreland A82,99
Amasa NY 18-- s.Ezek/CharityPhilips C154
Amasa CT 1771 s.James/RhodaGraves A22
Amasa CT 1773 s.James/RhodaGraves A22,26
Amasa CT 1802 s.Philo/SarahPenfield A142

She seemed to feel that the Amasa b. 1768, son of Daniel and Mary Ireland,
might be a good match, and _that_ line is from Duncan Stewart. But this is
all the purest of pure speculation, there is nothing concrete about it, much
less anything provable. If you have the date of birth for Amasa as 1797 you
must try to work back directly from him. But _perhaps_ the line ends up in
New England.

The Amasa who was the son of Daniel/Mary Ireland was born 18 Dec 1768 and
married 26 Feb 1788 Eunice Ireland in Canaan, Maine. He had a son Amasa,
but he was born in 1805 and he married Mary Spaulding, no date given.

Jeri also mentioned a Solomon Stewart who married Martha Farrington; these
are the parents of Daniel who married Mary Ireland. Solomon was the son of
James/Elizabeth (--), and James was the son of Duncan Stewart and Anne
Winchurst.

As for your second question, well, I think this is what haunts us all --!
Have you checked land deeds? More often than not a father will deed land to
his sons and mention specifically that they are his sons. I suppose you
have searched for wills? and death certificates? What about burial records,
some of the cemeteries have better ones than others.

Given the name I think you have a good case for your Amasa being the son of
Amasa and Regina Medaris, especially given the names of those children, but
if you want more than just personal satisfaction for it, you've got to dig.
How good are the records in Ohio? Have you been keeping an eye on the
USGenWeb pages, it's incredible how much primary source material is showing
up nearly daily on some sites.

Wish I could be more help!
Mary
