Hi Karen,

I guess what you're after is where to search for George W's parents?
Have you had a look at the passenger records, though that is a
time-consuming and back-breaking job, and I for one have had no luck at
all at it. There are a number of sites with ship lists though, you never
know. 1850 might be more producting than my date (1830) because it is
during the beginning of the famine years.

Does your stepmother have any clues as to which port the ship came in
at? I haven't done any work on migration patterns, but there might be a
clue there, in that they ended up in Indiana. Philadelphia, Baltimore,
New York, even Canada would all be possibles. A lot of people ended up
landing in Canada because it was a little cheaper, then made their way
south, sometimes through Michigan.

Other than that I haven't any bright ideas; you're right about nothing
being in the Stewart Clan Magazine indexes because your man is too late;
the editor's cutoff date was 1850.

The trouble is that the records in Ireland are so scanty, and unless you
know the name of the place the family came from you're licked before you
start. Another clue is what religion George W. was, though there weren't
many R.C. Stewarts, most were from Ulster and were Protestant. And most
were small farmers who never got into the records ...

His name of course is no help at all, obviously he was named looking
forward to his new land rather than looking back to his ancestors, but
you might find clues if you can sort out the names he named his children
-- which ones might have been Susan Kelso's idea and which were his own.
But if you only know of George W., it's down to the next generation; I'd
try to find out where the name Alfred came into the picture, it's a
reasonably odd one.

No other ideas, I'm afraid ...maybe some other Lister has some.

Good luck,
Mary
