Subject: Girard Stewart Family

My great great grandfather was Girard Stewart who was born June 21, 1845
Choctaw Co., MS and died Sept. 3, 1910 Henderson Co., TX. He married first (
probably in MS) Mattie Slaughter who was born July 28, 1846 and died June
19, 1881 Erath Co., TX. She is buried in the Hannibal Cem., 13 miles north
of Stephenville, Erath Co., TX. Not sure if she was born in MS or not.
Family lore is that her mother was a Stanfield who lived on a MS plantation
during the Civil War. I haven't been able to find either the Stanfields or
Slaughters in Choctaw Co.
When Girard Stewart enlisted for duty in the Civil War he listed his home as
the now extinct town of Bankston, Choctaw Co., MS. Bankston was burned to
the ground during the war and never rebuilt. Hence burned courthouse, hence
no records.
Girard had several siblings that we know of. Two brothers, Thomas Lecurgus
Stewart and Reuben Marcellus Stewart, I know nothing about. It's as if they
fell off the face of the earth ! Three other siblings came to TX and settled
in Brown County around 1870. They were Benjamin Franklin Stewart who married
Caroline Lever, Nancy 'Nannie' Stewart who married G. W. Small and Betty
Stewart who never married. The latter three are buried in the Eureka
Cemetery, Brown Co., TX.
We have information that Girard's parents were N. (or M) W. Stewart who was
born 1794 in TN and his wife could have been a Clemons. They died before the
Civil War started, in fact, we think the mother died in TN.
If anyone has any info on this Stewart family please contact me.
Thanks !
Debra Tucker
