Subject: [STEWART-L] Margaret STEWART - Revisited

Now that there may be a new set of members/Internet users on these mailing
lists, I thought I'd recap what I knew about "my" Margaret STEWART. I'm
also attaching a newspaper excerpt regarding a crime committed against
"Mrs. PORTEOUS" (see below!!!).
1. Working backwards, Margaret STEWART died February 22, 1892
(according to her tombstone at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Prince
Albert/Port Perry, Ontario, CANADA). Her age was given as 68 years, 11
months. (She was reinterred here in 1894 - her daughter Amy PORTEOUS made
the arrangements). Margaret either died outside Ontario or her death was
not registered.
2. Margaret appears to have married my gg-grandfather, George PORTEOUS, ca.
1845 (the first known child was born September 30, 1846) in Markham
Township, York County, Ontario, CANADA. George 'died' in 1870 (he spent the
remainder of this life at the Toronto Insane Asylum, possibility as a
result of a head injury or disease).
3. Although the information she reported in the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891
censuses is somewhat inconsistent, it appears that Margaret was born in the
UNITED STATES and was of Irish ethnicity.
So I'm looking to learn more about Margaret STEWART. Current theories,
based on previous feedback and searches, indicate she may have been born in
Pennyslvania, New Jersey or New York.
DOB: Unknown, Place: Unknown
Marriage: Possibly Markham Township, Ontario (Upper Canada?), possibly
around 1845
DOD: Feb. 22, 1892, Place: Unknown
Any help would be appreciated. :)
Thanks.

The Essence of Meaness
Some contemptible creature or it may be creatures quite beneath the level
of the common thief, raided Mrs. Porteous' poultry yard near Prince Albert
on Thursday night of last week and stole a turkey and three geese. Under
any circumstances the perpetrator of so contemptible an act of prigging
deserves a generous dose of the "cat" but what should be done to one who
robs the hen roost of a lone woman whose daily supply of bread depends on
her own exertion and industry. Parties who could be guilty of so despicable
an act the meanest of all acts of stealing are not fit to live in civilized
society."
