Hello all,
Thanks to the LDS and their ability to write clear instructions, and
Symantec's generosity in letting people download 'medicine' for free, I
am now bug-free. It was a '339' error, the SirCam virus/worm, that had
attacked my puter and I think I was lucky that the first program to foul
up was the 1880 census CDs because it meant that I contacted the LDS
first. They told me how to check whether I had SirCam, and then sent me
on to Symantec. As I am far from being computer-familiar it was with
great trepidation that I began the process -- which involved going into
'Safe Mode', already rather scary -- but all is normal again.
I hope that I have not myself infected anyone else. Please be wary.
The message is extremely innocuous. This is what Symantec has to say:
===============
Subject: The subject of the email will be random, and will be the same
as the file name of the email attachment.
Attachment: The attachment is a file taken from the sender's computer
and will have the extension .bat, .com, .lnk or .pif added to it.
Message: The message body will be semi-random, but will always contain
one of the following two lines (either English or Spanish) as the first
and last sentences of the message.
First line: Hi! How are you?
Last line: See you later. Thanks
Between these two sentences, some of the following text may appear:
I send you this file in order to have your advice
I hope you can help me with this file that I send
I hope you like the file that I send you
This is the file with the information that you ask for
================
As you can see, genealogy lists are just *made* for this, since we are
always giving advice or asking for it!
Good luck all,
Mary
