Hello all,
William B. Stewart, my husband's GG Grandfather, was married to
Janet/Jennet Simpson, daughter of Andrew Simpson and Jane Archibald.
William B. Stewart was a Blacksmith.
After wondering what the middle initial stood for, I received an e-mail
tip that was later verified.
His name was William Brown Stewart and he was from Ayrshire County,
Scotland (born 16 Jan 1824). I was also told that his parents were
William Stewart and Agnes Brown who apparently emigrated to Nova Scotia
with their son, William and one other son, Thomas Stewart.
After visiting
http://www.ayrshireroots.com/Genealogy/Surnames/Stewart/Stewart.htm as
per another e-mail, I discovered
Craigie
January 15, 1819 marriage of William Stuart and Agnes Brown
James Stuart C M 13 Jul 1828 parents William Stuart & Agnes Brown
Adam Stuart C M 20 Feb 1831 parents William Stuart & Agnes Brown
John Stuart C M 04 Jul 1833 parents William Stuart & Agnes Brown
David Stewart C M 07 Feb 1836 parents William Stewart & Agnes Brown
Then I came across ......
Tarbolton
29 Jan 1819 marriage of William Stewart & Agnes Brown
Thomas Stewart C M 23 Nov 1819 parents William Stewart & Agnes Brown
Robert Stewart C M 16 Sep 1821 parents William Stewart & Agnes Brown
William Brown Stewart C M 27 Jan 1824 parents William Stewart & Agnes
Brown
Andrew Stewart C M 30 Jun 1826 parents William Stewart & Agnes Brown
I was told that both marriage entries are quite possibly correct for the
William Stuart & Agnes Brown that I have been looking for as Craige and
Tarbolton are adjoining parishes in Ayrshire.
In keeping with the Tarbolton entry, I located both the William Brown
Stewart and sibling named Thomas that is alleged to have also emigrated
to Nova Scotia.
Another individual stated that she suspected that the Tarbolton entry is
the actual marriage but that I would need to hire the OPR films of both
parishes and check the original entries. They should make it clear which
parish was the place of marriage and which was just a proclamation of
banns. Having an entry in both parishes suggests that at the time of
marriage one lived in Tarbolton and the other in Craigie. It does not
mean that either of them were born in these parishes.
I live in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and have no idea as to
how to go about hiring the OPR films of both parishes. To be perfectly
honest, I am quite illiterate when it comes to researching in Scotland
(despite the fact that I have successfully taken my own French Acadian
ancestry back to 1632); hence, my reason for posting.
I was also told that it would be necessary to look at the original
entries for the baptisms and the marriages as one occasionally may get a
little extra information.
The bad news is that if William Stewart and Agnes Brown emigrated before
appearing in the 1851 census then my ability to trace further back is
severely limited. The 1851 census would give their ages and their
parishes of birth. Although there was a census in 1841, ages of adults
were rounded down and only the county of birth was given. With names
like Agnes Brown and William Stewart it becomes impossible to pick them
out from the crowd.
Might anyone have access to the 1851 census in order to do a look-up for
me?
Looking forward to any and all replies.
Warmest regards,
Michele Doucette
