If you descend from the following Stewarts please contact me as I may have
much to share:
William Stewart, born about 1667, came into possession of Ballylawn at the
death of his father prior to the beginning of the siege of Londonderry in
Dec, 1688. He rendered conspicuous aid to the defenders, and was later a
lieutenant-colonel in Lord Mountjoy's regiment of dragoons. He married a
daughter of Capt. Thomas Stewart of Fort Stewart, county Donegal. He was
living as late as 1715. Children:
Thomas married Mary Ward
Martha married John Kennedy of Cultra
ALEXANDER married Mary COWAN
Alexander Stewart, born about 1690, succeeded to the Ballylawn estate on the
death of his brother Thomas about 1731. He married (lic. June 27, 1737) his
cousin, Mary Cowan, daughter of Alderman John and Ann (Stewart) Cowan of
Londonderry. Mary had just fallen heir to a fortune accumulated in India by
her half-brother, Sir Robert Cowan. With his wife's money Alexander
purchased considerable land, including the estate of Comber in County Down,
the estate of Newtown-Ards in the same county, and a 60 year lease of the
estate of Kilrea, county Derry; also a lease of Magherafelt, Derry.
Children:
Robert first Lord Londonderry whose eldest son, Robert was Lord Castlereagh.
It is the relationship to Mary Cowan that I am most interested in and if
there is any Stewart who thinks they are related to this crowd please let me
know. I have the mother-load of Cowan information from their beginnings in
Stirling, Scotland to some remarkable adventures in Virginia, Tennessee and
points west.
Regards,
Robert Cowan
