Hi Mary,

In researching Stewart's from Harnett County, NC, I've come across what
appears to be your Charles Stewart. I haven't seen too much about this
Stewart family on the internet, so I'm glad you brought them up. I hope
someone else can add to what little I have. And thank YOU for providing
the information that you did! I found it most interesting.

This is from an 1850 Cumberland County, NC Federal Census transcription:

Northern Division 353- Chs Stewart 55m, Phebe 25f, Edith A. 16f,
Lydia 6f. +Eliza 5f, Alex 2m, Mary 2f.

Northern Division 351- Alfd Stewart 24m, Mary 21f, Jane 21f;
Saml Carpenter 21m.

These are from Harnett County, NC Federal Census transcriptions:

1860 81-81 Steinhart Alfd 35m, Mary 24f, Mary A. 7f, Wm. A. 6m,
Jas. 3m, S. J. 11/12m (surely this is a form of "Stewart" and was
just mistranscribed).

1870 Neills Creek 167-167 Stewart, A. W. 42m, Mary 38wife,
Mary A. 16f, Joseph 12m, Lucy I. 10f, George 4m.

1880 Neills Creek 129-129 Stewart A. N. 50m, Mary 42wife,
Mary A. 22dau, Josephus 17son, Lucy J. 16dau, George 13son,
Jas A. 5son; Gamis, John 18servant (again, it looks like a this is
a mistranscription of "Stewart, A. W.").

You can do a search at
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/search_all1.asp for the couple
Charles Stewart and Phoebe Matthews. That will give you a lot to chew
on. One of the versions has your Charles as the son of George Stewart &
Rebecca Utley and the grandson of Charles Stewart and Johanna Kirk (a
popular couple on this list). And it doesn't seem unreasonable, either.
So it would also appear that this Alfred W. Stewart of Harnett County,
NC may be your "A.W. (Stewart) of N.C." and whose mother was an earlier
wife of your Charles Stewart.

I got interested in this family as I was looking for the ancestors of
(George) Alton Stewart b. 29 May 1898. Alton one of the first, if not
the first, licensed pilots in NC. His license is on display in the
Coats Museum in the Town of Harnett County, NC and was signed by one of
the Wright brothers. Alton died in a plane crash on Christmas Day, 1929.

I hope this helps,

Stu
