Subject: [STROUD] Hornsby/Stroud Bible Images & Transcription
Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2003 23:55:34 -0500
I have just completed a presentation of the transcription and page images
of the family history
contained in what was originally known as the "Hornsby Family Bible". Noting
the date of
printing (1756) of the Bible it is probable it first belonged to Leonard
Hornsby (1699-1779).
Leonard Hornsby probably immigrated to America in abt. 1735 and settled in
Prince William Co.,
VA. He later moved to North Carolina and then on to Camden District, SC
where be died 6 April
1779.
At some point, this Bible probably was passed to Leonard's son John
(1753-1840). In another
transcription it is stated that down the side of one of the pages of this
Bible is written -
"This Bible is John Hornsby's Bible, may he have the Grace to read it."
Upon examination of the
Bible this entry could not be located. Apparently this "Hornsby Family
Bible" was brought into
the Stroud Family when John's daughter, Nancy Hornsby (1799-1846), married
Joseph H. Stroud.
After being passed down and remaining in the possession of several
generations of the Stroud
family, it eventually became to known as the "Stroud Family Bible".
In Feb. 2000, Henry G. Jordan, after receiving the Bible by inheritance,
gave the Bible to the
Chester District Genealogical Society of Richburg, Chester Co., SC. It was
George Harvey Moore
of the Chester District Genealogical Society who gave the Bible to Winthrop
University where it
is now archived. The Bible is currently located at:
Winthrop University
Dacus Library (rare books section, downstairs)
Rock Hill, York Co., South Carolina
Winthrop University Manuscripts
acc. 1015 box 1, folder 1, to 1
Collection: Stroud Family Bible
Family names and events
c. 1756-1940
Knowing the importance of the information to the Hornsby and Stroud
families, we have taken
the care and effort to create the most accurate transcription possible
within our means. We do
not claim perfection but are very pleased with the resulting seven month
project. This final
transcription is presented by Rex McLaurin and John B. Windham. I am very
happy to be able to
share this transcription and scanned images of the Bible pages with you. The
location of the
complete transcription and Bible page images is at my Family Tree Maker site
