Teresa,
I have found the discussion and comments on mobby most interesting. I
worked on a colonial site in South Carolina for several years. The site
is now a national park. Ninety Six was first settle by Robert Gouedy, who
was the licensed trader to the Overhills Cherokee in the mid-1700s. Peach
brandy was served at his ordinary and a number of barrels of peach brandy
were listed in his probate inventory. You mention mobby as being
fermented, not distilled? I gather it is akin to hard cider? I can tell
you from our research at Ninety Six, covering the period ca 1730-1830, we
never saw the term, mobby. Do you suppose the term was out of fashion by
this time?
