Time to repeat.
My 3g-grandfather Robert Stuart, (b18 Feb 1785 in Balquidder, Callandar,
Perthshire, Scotland, d 1848 in Chicago, IL. Buried in Elmwood Cem.,
Detroit, MI)
Came to Canada in the early 1800's to join his uncle ("Old Uncle") David
Stuart {b 1766 in Scotland, d 1853 in Detroit}in the fur-trading business
with John Jacob Astor.

David (never married) and Robert's father John --Ian mohr na Coille -- were
brothers. John Stuart was the schoolmaster of Strathyre and Callandar, as
well as recorder of parish records.

He married Mary Buchanan (b 1756). Their children were:
James, John, ROBERT, David, James, Janet, Alexander, Mary & Katrine.

John & David were sons of James Stewart (d 1796)- Seumas na Coille -- who
served in the Black Watch, and Katherine Stewart (?). Do not know
Katherine's family.

James Stewart was son of James Stewart (b abt 1690) and Janet Ferguson.

James Stewart was son of Alexander Stewart. I must honestly say that I don't
know the connection back to Robert the Bruce, but if these Scots claimed it,
I would not dispute it. And if anyone can help me, I would be most
grateful.)

Their family church in Balquidder (where I have been and attended a
service!) and where John recorded the births, christenings, deaths &
marriages of his family, is much more famous because Rob Roy is buried in
its graveyard. It is also recorded in "The Letters of Robert Stuart and
Elizabeth Sullivan (Stuart)" that Rob Roy's final duel was against his
neighbor Stuart and he lost!!

Robert (the one who came to America) went on to discover the Oregon Trail.
And when he finally got back to New York, married Elizabeth Emma Sullivan
(1792-1866) on 21 July 1813 in 1st Presbyterian Church, NYC. He established
the fur trading post on Macinac Island, MI (The Stuart House), was
Treasurer of the State of Michigan , and dealt in real estate in early
Detroit.
Their children were:
DAVID STUART (my gg grandfather), Congressman & US Gen in Civil War
1816-1868
