Dear KLJ82780:

Which records have you already looked to? It will help others to better help and direct you if you can provide more information. Do you have the names, dates, locations of any siblings for Fred? What was his full name? Do you know his birth order? Eldest son, second son, etc? Are you new to genealogy? New to Scottish Genealogy? Are you familiar with the Scottish Naming Convention? Responses to these questions will provide some clues as to how best to assist you.

If you have not already, I would recommend that you pay a visit to the General Records Office of Scotland's (GROS) public site --- Scotland's People. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Being as Fred (Frederick?) was born in 1846, you will need to look to the OPR (Old Parish Register). However, if you are lucky enough to know of a sibling born in 1855, the Statutory Records for that year do a bit of catch up, providing more background information than any other year. Scottish records are filled with wonderful information, more so than those found in the USA.

Scottish birth records --- 1855 and later, include the marriage date and location for the parents.

There was a census taken in 1851.

Using the Free Surname Search at Scottland's People for the surname "Stuart" and the year 1846, the Results returned were:

Search Count
Old Parish Records Births & Christenings 1846 - 1846 29
Old Parish Records Banns & Marriages 1846 - 1846 34
Wills & Testaments 1846 - 1846 9

Also -- in checking for contact information for you, the setting currently shows that you have opted to remain anonymous -- which is the default with the new "look" of the boards. If you want others to be able to more freely contact you to assist you in your quest and to respond to your messages, you may want to check your profile information and update it to reflect your actual choices, on both the Rootsweb.com and the Ancestry.com side (view) of the boards. You can use the same log-in and password for both.

It would also be nice if you would sign your posts so we might address you by name rather than KLJ082780.

Yours Aye,

Lauren M. Boyd, FSA Scot
