There are several avenues you can try:-

The family was still in England for the 1881 Census, your ancestor was 11 -
12 years and quite possibly still with his parents. Though just before
their departure they may have moved to one of the larger centers, do you
know what ship they came on, from where did it sail, why did they leave,
were they recruited as part of a specific scheme. From that you should be
able to determine parishes of birth, order the films and at least get to
his grandparents.

Alternatively use civil registration, required in England and Wales for
birth, marriage and death since 1837. Your local LDS should have indices,
which are alphabetic per quarter. Marriage certificates are pretty useful,
giving ages, occupations and fathers name's- though not as good as Dutch or
Mauritian, but you can't have it all your own way.

Probably no bad thing considering that it should be relatively easy for the
next two to three generations. Over reliance on the IGI could just result
in your re-creation of other's mistakes.
