Hi there,

Thought you might like to known about a great bargain I found last
weekend.

"Suffolk, with Norfolk and Essex, is included in a separate volume known
as the Little Domesday Book. This is misleading since its entries are
considerably more detailed than those of Domesday itself."

The above is an excerpt from editor Thomas Hinde's book, The Domesday Book:
England's Heritage, then and Now, Wayne, New Jersey: CLB (a division of BHB
International, Inc.). 1985. ISBN 1-85833-440-3

This book lists for $22.95, it was on sale at Border's Outlet for $4.99. To
find out where the nearest Border's/Waldenbooks/Border's Outlet/or Coopersmith
Stores are located, see their website: www.borders.com

Names of English landowners are given in this book, also a gazeteer has
present place names and what they were called originally. Each area has
listings such as: (Under Leicestershire): "Market Bosworth, The Count (of
Leulan) also holds 6 c of land in (Market) Bosworth ....Bosworde. In lordship
3 ploughs; 2 slaves; 7 freemen with 10 villagers and 7 smallholders have 2
ploughs. Woodland one league long and 1/2 league wide. The value was 4
(pounds) now 50s. Saxi held all these lands and could go where he would."

In the back is a listing of "Major Domesday Landowners" 338-342 (from
Urso d'Abetot - Thomas, Archbishop of York.

Among these "Major" landowners I found: "Otto the Goldsmith, Maker of
William I's tomb at Caen. His descendants were engravers for the king's mint.
Has holdings in Essex."

"William Peverel, perhaps illegitimate son of William I by his mistress;
took name of Peverel from his stepfather who married her (his mother). Large
holdings in Notts. and Derbys. Also in six other counties."

"Ranulf Peverel married former mistress of William I. oldings in Berks.,
Norfoilk, Oxons., and Suffolk."

"Walter Clifford - Domesday commissioner."

"Richard Scrope (my ancester) A Norman who settled in Herfordshire before
the conquest. Castle there."

These are just examples, and no where near all this book has. It is
large format. I felt it was a great book on the Domesday and the price was
right!!!

Maggie
