In answer to Debbie Pauls message of 4th April regarding personal ads.....

A couple of years ago I wrote to the East Anglian Daily Times asking them
to publish a letter giving details of my Suffolk ancestors, with a view to
tracing any descendants still living in East Anglia. On the advice of a
journalist friend I also enclosed a pound coin and asked if they would
kindly post me a copy of the paper that the letter was published in.

They replied, returning my pound and saying that a letter of this sort was
not considered suitable for publication.I would assume that their policy is
still the same and would suggest that the smaller more localised free
papers would be a better bet.I am sure that the County Libaries Service
would be able to provide a list of papers, areas coverd and addresses.

I also at the same time wrote a similar letter regarding my Wiltshire
ancestors to the Marlborough Times also enclosing a pound coin.I shortly
received a copy of the paper in which my letter was printed and a few weeks
later received a letter from a distant relative, also researching the same
families. He had read my letter in the Cotswold Standard a sister paper of
the Marlborough Times. As a bonus, the first time I visited my new found
cousin I was immediately presented with my Grandfather's Sam Browne Belt
which he had given away over forty years ago.

I have also had some interesting results from appeals for help placed in
local family history society journals.

Good Luck,

Sid Barker.
