For Pat Rossi et al,

Received your personal message and from the List on the wording of the
two William Spring documents.

These are both 'Bargain & Sale' documents in use from the 16th C.to
transfer real property from one person to another. I am told you might
find it useful to read Julian Cornwalls ' An introduction to reading old
title deeds' which you can get sent airmail for about UKĀ£4 from either
the SFHS or Family History magazine.

You questioned why King Charles II was described in the preamble to the
1663 document as King of France. Under the Treaty of Troyes (1420) it
was agreed that Charles VI of France would remain king during his
lifetime with Henry V of England ( of Agincourt fame) as heir to the
French throne. Henry was also to marry Charles daughter Catherine to
cement the union of France with England and accordingly their son Henry
VI was crowned King of France in Paris.
Thus all the Kings(Queens) of England thereafter have quite obviously
also been the French monach, although I have to say the French did not
quite see it like that.
If my memory serves me correctly it was only in the last century that
England formally renounced its title to the French throne.

Best wishes

John
