Subject: Adoption organisations

My mother born in Blything, District in 1917 was adopted in 1919. Can
anyone tell me what organisations would have been around that area then. I
have a handwritten pencil letter, with what looks like a Harrogate address,
referrring to adoption 'gratis' and a doctors statement dated April 1919,
address The Chantry, Saxmundham, stating that my mother was free of
infectious disease, and a christening card 2 days later at a church in
Glasgow, at which time her name was changed completely to the 'adoptive
parents'.
I do know there was nothing official until around 1927. I also know that
her father and mother were both alive and had other children, who were not
'adopted'.
I would be very grateful for anything that I might be able to follow up.
Thanks, Kathleen Smart.
Chippenham, Wiltshire.
