Hallo all
My grandfather had the stage name of Professor Challis, the Great Trick Violinist. He played in a concert at the Ipswich Working Men's Club in Upper Brook Street on 18 and 19 August 1899.
He was also a violinist in a small band on a pleasure steamer that plied up and down from Ipswich to London. His real name was John Calichinski when he settled in London from Poland in about 1890. In Poland he was known as Jan Kalicinski.
I would be grateful for any information on
1 John Calichinski
2 The Ipswich Working Men's Club. Does it still exist? Where in Brook Street was it?
3 That concert in 1899
4 What was the name of the pleasure steamer or the name of the company which operated it?
Any help at all would be appreciated. Many thanks
Harry
