I have just returned from a lovely trip "over the pond" and had the
chance of a one day visit to Lowestoft, from whence we took a taxi to
the church of St. Bartholomew's in Corton. Just inside the gate, from
the car park I located my great great grandparents (William & Emma REED)
grave marker in wonderful condition. What a thrill! I was actually
suprised to find Emma in the graveyard as she had commited suicide and I
thought perhaps they wouldn't have allowed her to be buried in the
churchyard. I didn't find a marker for William's second wife. I had
hoped it would be close by, as I haven't yet had the chance to find the
dates or even her first name.I just knew from his death certificate that
her first name sarted with a P. To my great dissapointment the church
was locked. I did get the vicar's name from the board out front and when
I have more time will write to him, but in the meantime I was wondering
if anyone could give me any information about the church itself. It is
under repair and looks to have been built in perhaps 2 or 3 stages with
the middle part not having a roof. Was it damaged during the war, with
the bombings? I knew from the 1881 census that William was living at
"Cliif House" and was head gardener. I have now found out that the
Colman (of mustard fame) family were the owners of the house, but have
been told that it no longer is standing. We only had 1/2 an hour so
didn't get into the village at all to look around. Are old maps
available that would show where the house was situated? Any help will be
greatly appreciated. I will tell tales another time of our unsuccesful
attempt to drive from Woodbridge to Polstead (where the family
originated). We are Canadians, need I say more of our trying to drive
over there?
Kindest regards...
