It's not that Canada was particularly easy or comfortable to get to, it's
probably because Canada was giving away land--free! If one could scratch
together the passage money and a bit more to get one started, be prepared
for a year or two of hardship and very hard work, one could end up with
decent sized farm, something that sounded promising to an ag lab.
