Pat. After two years of looking, first going through the microfiche
version of the 1881 census, then going through the CD version and still
striking a big fat zero, I finally found my great grandmother's 1881
entry. Her name had been horribly mispelled, both first and last. My
guess is that her employers may have given her name to the census taker,
and they didn't know how to spell it.
My suggestion would be to try all the spellings you can think of. If you
don't have any luck, you can try searching by first name and year of
birth, or try searching all entries for his parish of birth and year of
birth.
