Hello,
Seeing the recent correspondance on Seven Year Holidays in Australia, has prompted me to write to ask the following.
On 12th May 1838 my ancestor John Kirby Moore of Badley had his horse stolen.
He wrote at the time: -
My bay riding horse stolen from stable. I went to Chelmsford and Billericay in pursuit of him. S. Jay went to Haverhill etc, but we could gain no tidings of him.
May 14th
Had informatin of my horse and drove S. Jay to West Wickham in Cambridgeshire where he was detained. Dined and sleptat Sir Chas. Watson's at West Wratting (S. Jay also.)
May 15th.
S. Jay returned home with horse and Mr. Acton (Sir Charles' son in law) drove me to Cambridge Justice Sitting. Ultimately Obed Edwick was tried at Bury for stealing my horse and found guilty. Sentence 10 years transportation.
So are you the descendants of Obediah Edwick at this moment basking on the shores of Van Diemens land, thanking your ancestor for his moment madness all those years ago?
More seriously, no hard feelings, I would love to know what became of him. Presumably he will have arrived in Australia in about 1840 or 1841.
Regards
Nick Balmer.
