At first sight this sounded a remarkably good suggestion, especially if it
were extended to Counties. But on second thoughts...
Not all the fiche or film has been delivered yet!
Hampshire Record Office for example have only had part of their fiche, and
do not expect the rest until early February.
Other organisations have the census on film, with no index - eg Winchester.
By the time such a scheme has been set up and working, the rush will
hopefully have died down.
If for instance such a scheme had been set up for the IGI, it would have
been brilliant until the Familysearch facility came on line. But such a
scheme now for the IGI would not have any takers from us Listers, as we all
have access to the Internet.
Anybody know by the way, what subsidiary indexes are available for the 1901
census, apart from the National one? I think there are to be county wide
ones or so the HRO expects, but it appears not for individual towns. If
that is so, one must either use the County Record Offices for both indexes
and details, or the County for the index followed by the town for the
details!
I also thought, why stop at the 1901 census, why not include earlier ones,
and in fact any source available at the particular repository. Then I
thought, isn't that what these lists are doing right now? And the various
look-up offer sites?
A fine and generous thought though!
And if your scheme does get off the ground, you may put me down for
Southampton - just in case the PRO is useless for a long time!
Cheers, Dave Jacobs
