I think it varies from school to school..the smaller the school or more
rural the more chance that the head will do a proportion of teaching with
supply /temp teachers on a contract acting as heads release ..although
things do change rapidly.

Apart from large comprehensive/secondary schools, I don't know any head
teachers who don't teach at least some of the time, some of them for more
than 50% of the timetable. The rest of their "management" eats up
evenings and weekends.
I have a school manager's book from late 1800's to WW1 - when I get time to
check it, I will post any teaching salaries details to the list.
