Hi Jud
On Sunday 30 March 1851, the day appointed for the population census, there
also took place throughout mainland Britain a unique census of places of
worship. There were three different forms: for Anglicans, for Quakers, and
for other Nonconformists. Some questions were: how many free and other
(appropriated) sittings each place had; what was the estimated number of
attendants in the morning, afternoon and evening of 30 March, with the
average number over a period of months. Dissenters alone had to give the
numbers which could be accomodated in their free space or standing room and
to show whether or not each place was a separate and entire building used
exclusively for worship. The details for EYE Baptist Chapel are as follows:
Erected 1810. Sittings: free 158, others 250. Free space for 80. Present:
mornings 225 + 56 scholars; afternoon: 362 + 55 scholars; evening: 378.
Average (12 months) morning 250 + 100 scholars; afternoon: 380 + 100
scholars: evening 300. Signed Charles CARPENTER, Minister. [Registered 29
Aug 1810. 106 members and three stations in 1851. Affiliated to Suffolk
Union.RG31/3; SROB FK2/500/1/1/]. source Suffolk Returns from the Census of
Religious Worship, 1851 edited by T C B Timmins, 1997. Regards
