Hello,
It might help to know (if you didn't already, of course :-) that "Wesleyans"
means Methodists. (I should add that the two names do not mean precisely
the same, because in the history of Methodism, other groupings developed,
such as the Calvinistic Methodists and the Primitive Methodists). A
"Wesleyan Society" was what we would now call a Methodist Church (in the
sense of the members, not the building). The name "Wesleyan" comes from
John Wesley, who "founded societies or churches all over the land, and he
solemnly set apart godly men as their pastors." (Quoted from "Cyclopedia of
Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature", a late 19th century
work by McClintock and Strong - if you are interested, contact me off-list,
and I'll send you the whole entry on Wesleyans). Regarding baptism, yes,
Wesleyans (and Methodists generally) do christen babies, in a similar way to
the Church of England. I personally don't know if there are any records of
Wesleyan baptisms for Southwold. If no one else on the list gives you an
answer, you could try asking the Suffolk Record Office, email address:
I've just looked at the 1881 Census, and there seem to be 2 JELLICOE
families in Southwold, possibly related to one another. There is the family
of Thomas Henry JELLICOE, aged 69, born in "Kingsand, Devon" (In fact,
Kingsand is just over the border in Cornwall, about 3 miles south of
Torpoint). He was a Shipping Agent. Then there is the family of Henry P.
JELLICOE, aged 40, born in Southwold, a draper and grocer.
I hope this is of some help. Let me know if anything is unclear, or if you
think I may be able to help further.
Regards,
David Lamb (Paignton, Devon, UK)
