Thank you very much for this. It is much appreciated. I hadn't found them
in the 1861 census. Below this I have noted what I knew of this bit of the
family, prior to your finding. There is no reason to read it, it is just an
expression and enthusiasm for what you have found. The rather spurious
looking numbers are references to sources.
Wishing you every success in your researches,
Giles Colchester, researching family COLCHESTER, any place any time any
spelling

M1 & L5. Charles COLCHESTER was born in 1823 in Needham Market, Suffolk[1]
and died in 1885 in Bury St Edmunds[2]. He was a tailor in Bury St Edmunds,
living at 28 St Andrew Street in 1851[3] and was still there in the 1874
White's Directory[4]. By 1881 they were at 48 Guildhall St which had been
his son Edward's home who had gone to Coventry by then.[1]
He was married to Elizabeth TOMPSON in 1845 in Bury St Edmunds.[2] She was
born in 1825[1] and died in 1899 in Bury St Edmunds[2]. In the 1881 census,
her brother James Tompson age 24 who was a coach builder was living with
them.[1] Whether there was a relationship between this Elizabeth Tompson
and her mother in law Elizabeth Thompson is an open question.
The children of Charles COLCHESTER and Elizabeth TOMPSON have been
identified on the geography and age, with the exception of Edward who was
recorded in the census. The children were as follows:
M2 i. Charles COLCHESTER was born in 1846 in Bury St Edmunds. As he was on
exactly the same page in the Bury St Edmunds register of births, it suggests
that he was twin to his brother Edward.[2] In view of the subsequent two
children called Charles, it is probable that he died in infancy.
M3 ii. Edward Tompson COLCHESTER was born in 1846 in Bury St Edmunds and
died in 1933 in Coventry.[2] In the 1851 census, he was recorded as living
at Guildhall St, Bury St Edmunds.[3] By 1874 he was working from 11
Hospital Road as a compositor.[4] By 1881 he described himself as a
journalist and was living in Warwick.[1] He was married to Mary Annie
HOLMES in 1871 in Bury St Edmunds. She was born in 1848 in Coventry and died
there in 1932.[2] They had children.
M4 iii. Henry John COLCHESTER was born in 1848 in Bury St Edmunds and died
soon after his birth in Bury St Edmunds.[2]
M5 iv. Charles Ruffles COLCHESTER was born in 1850 in Bury St Edmunds and
died there within the year.[2]
M6 v. Charles COLCHESTER was born in 1851 in Bury St Edmunds and died there
in Hackney in 1917.[2] He was a schoolmaster, and at the time of the 1881
census he was in lodgings in Woolwich Kent as a single person boarding with
the Luff family.[1] He married Ann Mary DAY on 31 July 1888 in St Matthew
Bayswater London.[7] She was born in 1846[7] and died in 1913 in Hackney
London[2]. She was the daughter of Thomas Day a collector for a gas
company. At the time of her marriage, she was living at 18 Alexander St
Westbourne Park, and she was recorded as having no occupation. He was
working as a schoolmaster and living at St Peterburgh Place Bayswater.[7]
M7 vi. Jane Elizabeth COLCHESTER was born in 1854 in Bury St Edmunds.[2] She
married James Edward PAXMAN at St Matthews Church in Brixton Surrey on 28
Aug 1878. He was an ironmonger, born in 1853, the son of James Paxman a
draper.[7]
M8 vii. Ann COLCHESTER was born in 1856 in Bury St Edmunds and died soon
afterwards.[2]
M9 viii. William COLCHESTER was born in 1857 in Bury St Edmunds.[2] He was
the innkeeper of the One Star at 9 Mustow Street, Bury St Edmunds where he
lived in 1881,[4] and later of the Fox.[5]
M10 ix. Mary A COLCHESTER was born in 1859.[5] She died in 1935 in Bury St
Edmunds.[2]
M11 x. George Ballerbee COLCHESTER was born in 1861 in Bury St Edmunds and
died there the following year.[2] His name was given as Ballerbee in the
birth register index,[2] Batterbee in the National Burial Index,[6] and as
Brotherbee in the death register index.[2] I rather like the name of
Brotherbee - sounds very kindly and industrious.
M12 xi. Harry Ruffles COLCHESTER was born in 1867 in Bury St Edmunds and
died in 1928 in Braintree.[2] He was brought up at 48 Guildhall St, Bury St
Edmunds[8] and by the time of the 1881 census was at 28 St Andrews St.[1]
By the early 1900's he had an ironmongers shop in the town. The 1912, 1916
and 1925 Kellys directories listed him as an ironmonger at 78 St Johns St
Bury St Edmunds.[5]
He was married to Catherine A in 1902 in Sudbury, Suffolk. Catherine was
born in 1873 and died in 1918 in Bury St Edmunds.[2] Her name and dates of
birth and death are speculative, as they are based on this being the only
suitably named death in Bury St Edmunds prior to Harry remarrying. They had
no known children.
He was then married to Annie WAGSTAFF in 1921 in Bury St Edmunds.[2] Harry
and Annie had one child.
