Thanks so much for that info, it certainly means that the people in the
article could well have been mine, and also explains why the dealer might
have incited the boy to steal tools.
Interestingly one of the Google hits was one of the famous "sketches by
Boz", fascinating reading.

use Google you will find several references to the occupation.
Marine store, a store where old canvas, ropes, etc., are bought and sold; a
junk shop.
