Hello,

I think there may be some confusion here. As the subject was "Ordering
Certificates from GRO" (i.e. from the General Register Office, the central
repository covering the whole country), I must admit that I was somewhat
surprised that you had been told you had to supply an exact date of death.
After all, to order any certificate from the GRO all you need is the
information provided in the GRO Index entry, which as far as dates are
concerned means the quarter of the year, not an exact date. But from what
you have now written, it seems that it was a local register office, not the
GRO. That (as the Americans might say) is a completely different ball-game.
The main reason for this is that although local register offices often will
search for old certificates, their main function is the registration of
current births, marriages and deaths. I certainly agree that it is a pity
the office concerned could not have told you this in a more polite way,
though.

> Many thanks to those who responded to my query. Hoping the Registration
Office is more understanding than the last time I tried to obtain a
certificate. In their words they were 'Far too busy to look for old
certificates' This was not a Suffolk Office where I have found staff to
be very helpful.
