Subject: NORMAN Ipswich - sewing machine 'maker'

Hello all
My grandfather, George William Norman, was born Ipswich St Mary Elms in 1877, and his father was described as a blacksmith on the birth certificate. Previously, in 1866, he was listed as a 'sewing machine maker'. My guess is that he was an outworker, assembling sewing machines from parts made in
a factory, somewhere in Ipswich.
Any comments?
John
